Shocking Research on Infant Colic | The Fussy Baby Site

An article was published this week on the psychology of infant colic. The results may come as a shock to you, but this scholarly review of the current research indicated that colic still sucks.

I am paraphrasing a bit, but that’s the gist of it.

The review summarized where the current research is at:

  • We still don’t know what causes colic
  • Colic is very distressing for parents
  • Some researchers have argued that the disruption to the parent/child bond that occurs because of colic can have long term consequences
  • Some researchers have suggested that crying that does not end around 3 months may have long term implications
  • Definitions of colic to this point have relied on behavioural descriptions (eg. 3 hours of crying, 3 days a week, etc.), and this may make it more difficult for us to come up with an accurate definition
  • More research is needed to better understand colic
  • We need to figure out better coping and soothing strategies

Duh. I think the shocking thing about this research is how much they probably spent to find out what parents of colicky infants already know.

Cheril, :) Funny how pretty much every new study that comes out says the same thing!

I feel like we could have told them much of this information, ha. Even the part about having long term consequences sounds about right to me. Our son is growing up to be one of the whiniest kids ever no matter what myself and my husband do to try to prevent the behavior. My husband also said he wouldn’t be surprised if we both have PTSD associated with his excessive crying/screaming in his first two years. Our second child was just born on the 5th of July and her LACK of screaming is such a breath of fresh air! In fact, it scares me because you hardly know she is even there…awake, alert, and happy (three words that we have never used all together until now).
