I'm wondering if my baby has lactose intolerance. My husband's father has lactose intolerance and DH suspects he might as well (even though he continues to consume dairy products because he loves them). There are some people in my family who have been lactose intolerant. My DS2 has always vomited so much of his milk when nursing but this weekend on a suggestion from a family member I gave him a lactose-free formula and he rarely spit up. He seemed to be in a better mood as well and not quite as fussy. Now this was just a day's worth of trying something different so I'm not sure it's really the case. Does anyone else have a similar experience with a baby having issues with lactose?

Although my daughter was diagnosed in the hospital with lactose intolerence because of a diaper rash, she still had problems when we got home with spitting up and screaming sometimes when she was having her bottle.  She seemed to be in pain whenever she ate.  We were already using a lactose-free formula so we switched to a sensitive, lactose-free formula and it made a world of difference.  Sometimes, you just have to try a different formula for it to make a difference or it could be lactose.  Keep notes for yourself on what worked and talk to your pediatrician.  They might be able to help find out for sure what is causing your little guys problem.  In our case, we were told to do what ever worked best.  Good luck!

It's possible that it's the lactose, but according to everything I've heard and read, LI in babies is extremely rare. In general, it's MUCH more possible that it's a milk protein issue rather than a LI issue. That said, of course some babies (even though very few) have trouble with lactose, so it's always a possibility. And if you found a difference on the lactose free formula, maybe it is. I would say keep watching it and if you notice the symptoms coming back, try a hypoallergenic formula and see if you notice a difference.
