Melissa --

My husband also has to travel for overnight trips regularly, and we have no family in the area.  I go into shutdown mode when he's away in order to conserve the energy I'm going to need to help our extremely needy 3 month old (Mr. Cub) find peace at least part of each day.

For example, I eat cereal for multiple meals a day because it's quick and requires no preparation.  I forgive myself if, thinking our son was sound asleep, I finally take a toilet break but instead have to listen to him scream while I finish.  I give myself permission to watch a lot of TV on the couch (for stretches of time when Mr. Cub won't sleep anywhere other than on me).

Definitely let your husband take him for a full day, and overnight if you have a friend to stay with.  I couldn't imagine how hard it would be to live through a high needs baby without even your husband to commiserate with you.
