I have a 10month old son who was a dream up until 5 months old, then hasn't really slept right since. But, I've done a TON of reading and research into the potential reasons and wanted to share some of my findings:
-It seems that lots of, if not all, babies change all the time. Sleep can be disrupted by the baby working on a milestone, for instance, which is impossible for us as parents to understand until they wake up one morning able to crawl!
-most babies who were heavier sleepers, (back in Neanderthal times), didn't last long, because lighter sleepers were more apt to be fed more often, noticed more and alert their patents to danger, so it's actually inherent in us all to have 3 hour periods of sleep and then want to wake. Adults do this too but we sleep through these phases. So, it's natural for babies to not instinctually want to sleep through the night.
-my son wound up having a reflux issue, which Dr. sears says is the leading underlying cause of "colic" in babies. Frustrated parents just dint know what else to call it, so they call it colic. Try eliminating dairy and wheat from your (mom's) diet if you're nursing. My son stopped all spitting up when I did this.
-And it seems that having a baby who is a high needs baby may indicate that they are highly intelligent. A study in Europe I read about somewhere said that babies who learn quickly get bored with the age appropriate toys and need more challenging (not frustrating:) toys.

Those are my $.02:)
I would say to wait until your babies are older to sleep train them, or want them to sleep through the night. Try having them sleep with you, safely, (no alcohol or drug use, edges of the bed protected, nothing that can cover baby's face, etc), because that is where they want to be. The rate of SIDS goes down with co-sleeping, (even in a side-car sleeper), because mom and baby are so in tune with each other. Think about it this way, the baby was IN your body for it's whole conscious life. Now it's OUT. Keep it as close to you as possible:)

Good luck!!!
